Jan Rijlaarsdam (1911-2007) – Cityscape

Jan Rijlaarsdam was versatile in styles and applied various techniques in his work. An impressive oeuvre, varying from realistic to impressionistic and expressionistic with even trips to the abstract. He experimented with different materials and substrates. Jan Rijlaarsdam, also known as the painter of the seamy side of society, chose subjects in the tradition of Isaac Israëls and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. He was thus an imaginer of urban life.
