Gerardus Bernardus Josephus Westermann (1880-1971) – Equestrian

Westermann was a student of Johannes Hendricus Jurres and at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He painted, made watercolors and drew. His subjects were portraits, figures, horses and still lifes. With his painting horseman he won a bronze medal at the art competitions at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the category watercolor and drawings. Between 1918 and 1945 he was a lecturer at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Pupils of him were Leo Visser and Jan Battermann. His son Bert (philosopher, economist and art historian) was married to actress Riek Schagen. Westerman also worked under the pseudonym Johs. Labasky.
