Gerbrand Frederik van Schagen was born on 7 March 1880 in The Hague and was a student of the Akademie in The Hague. He was taught by the painter W.B. Tholen. Van Schagen worked along the lines of the Hague School. He was pre-eminently a painter of the Dutch landscape and could often be found in the Gooi and Kortenhoef. Paintings by this master can be viewed in the Singer Museum in Laren, among others.
