Henricus Josephus Maria van Rosmalen studied at the State Academy of Art in Amsterdam. He worked in Spain, France (Paris), the Netherlands and Belgium. But also in Italy where this nice work comes from. The versatile artist is also known as Hakkie van Rosmalen. The painting gives a view of the small and cozy Camogli, with its medieval village center. It is a maze of narrow streets and lots of stairs. The (pebble) beach is very photogenic, since you can especially see here in which pastel shades the high and narrow houses are painted. The tall houses hang lazily against each other in the cautious afternoon sun. Camogli owes its name to the fact that the houses were the domain of the women, who stayed at home when their husbands, the fishermen, went out. It is a corruption of case delle mogli (‘houses of the wives’). The color of the houses is not only an aesthetic matter. It was the way for the local fishermen to recognize their house from the sea. It is sometimes said that each house was given a different color, so that the fishermen knew how to recognize their own house from the sea. Whether it is true, we dare not say for sure, but the sight of all these beautifully colored houses makes our hearts jump for joy. (Source: internet)
