Désiré Donny (1798-1861) – Maritiem

Désiré Donny 1798 – 1861) was a Belgian painter from the Romantic School. He was the son of Jean Joseph Donny, a clerk of the Four Scissors and a fervent supporter of the attachment of the Southern Netherlands to the French Republic, and of Marie-Josephe Christiaens. He was educated at the Art Academy in Bruges and subsequently teacher. But he later worked in Frankfurt and then mostly in Brussels. He painted many marines and animated faces with fishing boats or tree boats on the beach at low tide, such as in Scheveningen and Katwijk. He is also known for a number of genre scenes and interiors under moonlight. Around 1839 he also started painting ports and river views under moonlight and dark cityscapes, including his birthplace Bruges. His genre pieces sometimes have a social slant, such as the painting “Animated interior”. In this painting, a wealthy lady visits a poor woman with two children. This painting continues the tradition of 17th-century Dutch paintings of interiors with maids and kitchen tools. He was also a portrait painter. His portrait of General François-Xavier de Wautier hangs in the Royal Military Museum in Brussels. A private Bruges collection includes the painting of members of the Civic Guard who participated in the Belgian Revolution of 1830.
